MAINTAINING  A  DISTANCE  OF  5  PACES  BEHIND

Barbara Walters of 20/20  (USA-ABC Television) did a story on gender roles in  Kabul,  Afghanistan, several years before the Afghan conflict.  She noted  that women customarily walked 5 paces behind  their husbands.

She recently returned to Kabul and  observed that women still walk behind their husbands. From Ms. Walter's point, despite  the overthrow of the oppressive Taliban  regime, the women now seem  to walk
even further back behind  their husbands and are happy  to maintain the old custom.

Ms. Walters  approached one of the Afghani women and asked, "Why do you now seem happy  with the old custom that you once tried so desperately  to change?"

The woman looked at  Ms. Walters straight in the eyes, and without hesitation, said, "Land   mines."

Yeah true, behind every man is a smart woman!

As Salaamu Aleikum,

Oh....that was funny!  RollLaugh

Is that really a true story?

You know, I've heard that Native Americans used to have a similar tradition, and 'good women', back in the old days, (as in, such women were considered virtuous and moral) were often referred to as 'stand-behind-me women', quite literally. (I know this, because I'm part Cherokee, and have heard this 'Indian lore' from family members) I don't know if '5 paces' was specified, but they were expected to always stand behind their men, to some degree. What a blow to all the 'feminists' out there, if it turns out it was all really just about 'protecting' the women, rather than 'oppressing' them? Actually makes quite a bit of sense, now that I think about it that way...

teethsmile teethsmile .. yes i think it is a true incident.  i mean, women walking behind their husbands is not a culture in practice any more, not really.  however, usually when a family goes out .. husband, wife and 3, 4 or 5 kids, the wife is often seen tagging along with the kids and not able to catch up with the husband .. LOL.  i guess it's just a scenario, not a culture.  but in the yester years, about 4 or 5 decades ago, such social traditions did exist in rural afghanistan.

Walaikum Salaam
