Fulfilment of Abraham's prayer (Surah Al-Baqrah)

Reflections on the Glorious Quran


When Prophet Abraham (pbuh) with his son Ishmael was constructing the Kaa'bah at Mekkah, he prayed to Allah Almighty to send a messenger among the Arabs in Makkah to show them right guidance.  This is elucidated in the following verses:

And when Abraham and Ishmael were raising the foundations of the House, (Abraham prayed): Our Rab! Accept from us (this duty). Indeed, You, only You, are the Hearer, the Knower. (2:127)

Our Rab! And make us submissive unto You and of our seed a nation submissive unto You, and show us our ways of worship, and relent toward us. Indeed, You, only You, are the Relenting, the Merciful. (2:128)

Our Rab! And raise up in their midst a messenger from among them who shall recite unto them Your revelations, and shall instruct them in the Scripture and in wisdom and shall make them grow.  Indeed, You, only You, are the Mighty, Wise. (2:129)

Verse 3:164 is generally recognized as the fulfilment of Abraham's prayer by Allah (The Most High) in sending Prophet Mohammed (pbuh) as His final Messenger to the Arabs of the Arabian peninsula. 

Allah verily has shown grace to the believers by sending unto them a messenger of their own who recites unto them His revelations, and causes them to grow, and teaches them the Scripture and wisdom; although before (he came to them) they were in flagrant error. (3:164)
