He was the the most astounding terrorist of South-Eastern Europe in 1400s, and one of the most ferocious tyrants on the surface of the earth.

This historical account is about a barbarous, bloodthirsty European warlord of the northern Romanian region of Wallachia.  Wallachia is in modern day northern Romania in south-eastern Europe.  But in the 15th century it was an independent entity.   The maps will help you to know the geographical location. Born Vlad III in 1428, he later came to be known as Vlad the Impaler and Vlad Dracula because of his chilling ruthlessness.  In Wallachian language "dracula" means devil.  In Romania this man was known as Vlad Tepes, 'tepes' is the Romanian term for 'impaler.'   He died in 1476.   He lived for 48 years, turning those years into one of the most brutal in human history.   Obsessed with the act of impaling, in modern times the term 'psychopath' would be fully befitting for this pitiless savage.   He not only impaled his opponents to end uprisings, but impaling was his standard strategic plan to discreetly terrorize the populace.   This bestial creature was a thorn in the side of the Ottomans for years.

His father was Vlad II or Vlad Dragon.  He was a member of the ill-famed and discreditable 15th century Order of the Dragons  founded in Luxembourg.  One its vital objectives in the 1400s and later was confronting and thwarting the Ottoman Empire.  Vlad Dragon proved to be too powerless and incompetent to face the Ottomans.  He was virtually their subordinate.  When the Ottomans invaded Transylvania in 1430s which was under the Romans, Vlad Dragon defected the Roman army and in favor of the Ottomans.  Consequently the Romans stripped Vlad II of his entitlement to rule Wallachia.  The showdown between Vlad II and the Romans was beneficial for the Ottomans.  Very soon the Ottomans conquered Wallachia and Vlad II was reinstated as ruler of Wallachia.  He remained a puppet in the hands of the Ottomans as he was completely dependent on the Ottoman Sultan for protection.

Vlad the Dragon had a hideous looking young son who later came to be known as Vlad the Impaler or Vlad Dracula.  "Dracula" in Wallachian language means 'devil.'  Aggressive, crude and thoroughly uncompassionate, Vlad the Impaler was obstinate and difficult even as a teenager.  Much the opposite of his brother, Radu, who was gentle, embraced Islam and was an ally of the Ottomans.  When Vlad Dracula was 18, neighboring Transylvania conquered his father's territory in Wallachia, deposing and killing his father, Vlad the Dragon.  The Ottoman Sultan refused to provide Dracula with weapons and an army to recapture Wallachia.  Vlad Dracula started collaborating with Hungary.  Five or six years later  Vlad Dracula recaptured Wallachia.  The slaughter was widespread.  He was now firmly embedded in his home country proclaiming himself the ruler of Wallachia.   He became one of the most ruthless despots imaginable in world history.  He annihilated the Wallachian elites and wouldn't stop to destroy anyone remotely suspected of opposing him.

His biggest threat were the Ottomans.  In 1449 the Ottoman sultan sent a few of his envoys to meet with Vlad.  When they were presented to Vlad at the ruler's court, they were wearing their Turkish turbans as was the Ottoman custom.   Vlad didn't like that, ordering them to remove their turbans.  The envoys explained it was simply a religious and social tradition of their society.  Vlad was still displeased, but said he "would help them keep their turbans secure."  The impaler did that by nailing their turbans to their heads, killing the envoys.  It was infamously one of the cruelest incidents in Vlad Dracula's blood drenched rule.

wore the Turkish turban - Wikimedia Commons.

Dracula later invaded Transylvania unleashing wholesale loot and plunder and impaling prisoners on stakes.  So terrible was his invasion that the Transylvanians said Vlad the Impaler didn't hesitate to literally drink the blood of the people he slaughtered.

By 1460, Dracula had silenced all opposition.  He now felt safe as a man of absolute power in Wallachia, though Wallachia was still under Ottoman rule.   In 1462 when the Ottoman sultan, Mehmed the Conqueror, came to power, he demanded that Dracula pay the jizya tax.   Dracula refused, rebelled and attacked the Ottoman territory of Bulgaria, killing some 20,000 Ottomans by impalement.  Sultan Mehmed with his army marched against Vlad Dracula in Wallachia.  Dracula was aware it wasn't possible for him to defeat the Ottomans.  So he went underground and responded through a series of disastrous guerilla tactics, poisoning wells, destroying his country's agricultural fields, livestock and villages and diverting streams to create marshes and quagmires to impede the movement of Ottoman forces.  He also sent people with contagious diseases like plague, smallpox and leprosy to infect the Ottoman army.  Yet Dracula couldn't stop the advancement of the Ottoman army.   He then carried out a surprise night attack with hundreds of his horsemen  on the Wallachian capital where the Ottoman army and the Sultan had encamped.  Vlad's men sneaked into the camp disguised in Ottoman clothes. Though the attack was eventually a failure leaving Vlad Dracula with no other option but to retreat, it caused enough chaos and death in the Ottoman camp.  Despite the widespread mayhem, somehow the Sultan survived whose assassination was Dracula's prime goal.  Dracula escaped to neighboring Transylvania as a powerless and resourceless exile.

As the story goes, Wallachia was in ruins after clashes between Dracula's forces and the Ottomans.  The former's brother, Radu, had taken over Wallachia and enjoyed much greater popularity than Dracula, the Impaler, who again began cajoling the Hungarian king for help to retake Wallachia but to no avail.

More than a decade later when the Ottomans reached Belgrade, Dracula somehow managed to return to Wallachia as the ruler.  But after a few short years came the next onslaught by the Ottomans in Wallachia like a ton of bricks;  Dracula was finished and killed in 1476.   Good riddance to a horrific rubbish!     No surprise, considering Europe's notorious benightedness .. a state of moral/intellectual decay and penchant for savagery, after this man's death his legacy was "revered rather than reviled.

It was much later in 1859 when Wallachia united with Moldavia to be named Romania in 1866.

Of course the stories of Count Dracula are fictions by Abraham Stoker.  But undoubtedly the author got the idea of a blood-sucking count by piecing together the cruelties of Vlad the Impaler of Wallachia.

Last but not least, to heighten the "razzle-dazzle" the British blue blooded "royals" with the 'decor' of psychopaths, according to Charlie Windsor himself, genealogy shows he and his mamma are related to Vlad the Impaler (Dracula).  If by any chance he is proud of such genealogical discovery, he either definitely has psychotic tendencies or has proven the abominable standard of the costly Brit elite education in private institutions.

Ya Allah!    Absolutely hair-raising!    Makes one realize how silent the world is about European inhumanity and sadism that knew no bounds.

If Charlie Windsor had an ounce of shame, he would keep his mouth shut about a discovery on ancestral links as embarrassing as this.   No wonder they get along so fine with criminals like MbS.

Insh'Allah, I will forward this to my dad.   I'm sure he will have a lot to say about it.

I can imagine if any Muslim ruler back in Islamic history behaved this way, how much and how loud the world would talk ceaselessly, non-stop, for generations.   But if a European warlord was unhinged committing the most atrocious of crimes .. it's viewed as a matter of generating interest.

The big problem with western historians, analysts, observers and the international crowd at large is that if Vlad Dracula or Henry VIII are mass murderers only they are responsible.   But if any single individual from the Nasrids or Abbasids or Ottomans did such a thing, then all Muslims of all past and future generations are supposed to be responsible.

Thank you for this very informative piece Sister Zeynab.

You're absolutely right brother TS.   That's a very precise summary of this brazen duplicity of the human mentality.
