As-Salam Alaykum dear all.   Can anyone kindly give me some information about the Islamic personality, Syeda Nafisa?    I've heard of the name but don't know.   Was she directly related to the Prophet's (pbuh)?  If so, how?

Walaikum As-Salaam Sister Ruhi.    Yes, she was related to the Prophet (pbuh) in lineage.   Alhumdulilah.

Her full name, Syeda Nafisa bint Al-Hasan, was the great-granddaughter of Imam Hasan (Prophet's [pbuh] grandson).  She was the daughter of Hasan al-Anwar who was the son of Zayd, and Zayd was the son of Imam Hasan.   That makes her the great-great granddaughter of the Prophet (pbuh). Syeda Nafisa born 145 AH (762 AD) and died 208 AH (824 AD) at age 62.   She was born 192 years after the Prophet (pbuh).  Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) born 570 AD and passed away 632 AD.

Image of a rudimentary family tree to make it easier to understand:

She spent the later years of her life in Cairo where I'm told there is a Mosque in her name.  She married the son of the 6th Imam, al-Jafer al-Sadiq, and they migrated from Hejaz to Cairo.  They had two children, a son and a daughter.  Syeda Nafisa's piety was well known.  She was greatly respected and loved by all those who knew her.  She was a wealthy lady and spent plenty of money helping the unfortunate, the sick and the disabled.  One of her students was al-Shafi, founder of the Shafi school.  Shortly before his death, al-Shafi mentioned in his will that his funeral prayer should be read by Syeda Nafisa.

There are lots of stories about many miracles taking place in her life.  But those cannot all be trusted.   After all it's the nature of people to fabricate.  Some may have been true, not all.  Only Allah Almighty would know best.   But Syeda Nafisa was no doubt a person of great virtues.

O!  big thanks Sis.   That was helpful.

One of her students was al-Shafi, founder of the Shafi school.  Shortly before his death, al-Shafi mentioned in his will that his funeral prayer should be read by Syeda Nafisa.

Really!   Isn't that surprising.   Imam al-Shafi is known to be strictly traditionalist .. and he wishing his female teacher to lead his janazah prayer.   Subhan'Allah.

Yeah, precisely.  It is pretty surprising.   But a positive step by Imam Shafi.

Mash'Allah, sounds like a very impressive personality.  I've heard of her name but didn't know the details nor did I know that Syeda Nafisah was so directly linked to the Prophet's (pbuh) family.   Is it really true that Shafi wanted her to lead his funeral prayers?

....  Is it really true that Shafi wanted her to lead his funeral prayers?

Yes Sister, I'm quite certain this is correct info.   As Sister Zeynab rightly mentioned that lots of false information has also been gathered in connection with Syed Nafisa involving stories containing miracles.  But about her leading Shafi's prayer is consistent from many sources.  While the final truth is only known to Allah on all matters, from whatever I know, this bit seems true.
