"You will find the most vehement of mankind in hostility to those who believe (to be) the Jews and the idolaters.  And you will find the nearest of them in affection to those who believe (to be) those who say:  Indeed!  We are Christians.  That is because there are among them priests and monks, and because they are not proud."  5:82  Al-Maidah.

I should have discussed this earlier, but somehow forgot.  A couple of years ago during a presentation session at our Islamic  community centre, one of the bad guys trying to act the maverick picked up an argument.   He began making comparisons of Verses 5:82 with 57:27.   He said that Verse 5:82 speaks well of "priests" and "monks"  (in Arabic  qissīsīna  "قِسِّيسِين"  and waruh'bānan "وَرُهْبَانًا"  respectively) who followed the monastic way of life which is not approved by The Almighty in Verse 57:27 quote "But monasticism they invented - We ordained it not for them - only seeking Allah's pleasure,"  (already discussed in our post Monasticism not ordained by Allah).  So, the guy started touting this as a "contradiction," typical of a closed mind incapable of dissecting and scrutinizing the facts.

Verses 5:82 and 57:27 are independent Ayat highlighting different points on the ground.    Though the Christian priests and monks  followed monasticism which is not approved by Allah as plainly asserted in Verse 57:27, Verse 5:82 speaks about the aggression, hostilities and hatred nurtured by the Jews and idolaters towards the Muslims in the Prophet's  (pbuh) era that far exceeded the hostilities harbored by the Christians towards the Muslims.   Despite following monasticism which is unnecessary, at least those priests and monks were more rational and probably better educated, therefore more given to pondering and reflecting on the Divine Revelations coming to Prophet Muhammad (pbuh).  That made them less aggressive and more cool headed, and many of them were able to perceive and understand the truth far more clearly.   Thus, they were a lot more acceptable compared to the Jews and idolaters.  Compared to the characteristics of aggression, scheming and plotting as was rife among the Yahuds and idolaters, the Christian violation of following monasticism was a lesser problem.   Verse 5:82 does not portray that everything the priests and monks practiced was correct, but they were more thoughtful and sagacious in comparison.   In Verse 5:82 Allah Almighty speaks about a specific section of Nasaras, not all of them.    Divine Justice is perfect and those Nasaras whom The Almighty sees as righteous, will not be categorized with others of their community who are unrighteous.  Verses that follow Ayat 5:82  clarify without a doubt that the believing and sincere Nasaras are the same as Muslims (submitters to Allah alone), in that, The Almighty will InshAllah grant them their reward to the fullest.   These Verses make it possible that several of them believed in the Quran ... may have even embraced Islam (submission to Allah alone) by discarding the interpolations of mainstream Nasaras (commonly called Christians) during the Prophet's (pbuh) era.

"When they listen to that which hath been revealed unto the messengers, thou seest their eyes overflow with tears because of their recognition of the Truth. They say: Our Lord, we believe. Inscribe us as among the witnesses."  5:83.

"How should we not believe in Allah and that which hath come unto us of the Truth. And (how should we not) hope that our Lord will bring us in along with righteous folk?"   5:84.

"Allah hath rewarded them for that their saying - Gardens underneath which rivers flow, wherein they will abide for ever. That is the reward of the good."    5:85.

Then again, for example if you focus on Verse 3:110 where The Almighty speak about the Yahuds and Nasaras in general, He says:

"And if the People of the Scripture had believed it had been better for them.   Some of them are believers; but most of them are evil-livers."  3:110.

So, it's all very clear, logical and filled with the perfection of Justice from The Almighty.   He never treats anyone unjustly.    There is NO question of any "contradiction" in Verses 5:82 and 57:27.

Thank you so much dear Sister Heba.  That's such a useful and informative clarification .. particularly informative for those who have read parts of the Noble Quran, not the whole.   It seems that that strange guy was similar to one of those hostile Yahuds and idolaters, like a dumb predator waiting to attack the Words of The Almighty.

Thanks dear Sis.

So correct, they're like predators who want to spread their disbelief.
