assalam alaikum to you everyone.   In a Muslim scholar's lecture I attended some days ago he said when reciting Quran surah during salat or when reading the Quran if you don't understand the meaning it's ok.  That confused me.  Is it really ok to recite or read the Quran without understanding it?

Walaikum As-Salam.   That's certainly not okay.  The Noble Quran is a Book of Guidance for all facets of life.  It's incumbent upon us to follow the Quranic instructions and guidelines.  If we don't understand what we are reading, how can we follow?   It's an old tactic of majority of our scholars that they want us to stay dumb and not understand the Quran.  At least 90% of the contents of all their lectures are based of hadith narrations, the approach and ideology of which clash with the Noble Quran.  If we read and understand the Quran for ourselves (which is what Allah Almighty wants us to do), then those scholars will be 'out of business.'  No one will be interested in their lectures;  and those who listen to their lectures will find plenty of discrepancies and will ask them many questions which they won't be able to answer.  Considering all of this, they think it's best to suggest 'even if we don't understand the Quran, it's okay.'   It's not okay.   We need to understand the Quran as best as we can.  There can be NO arguments on that for sure.
