August 01, 2022, 08:48:12 pm Ruhi_Rose: As-Salam Alaykum MV guests. Just a reminder how time flies. We're already in the Islamic new year of 1444 month of Muharram, a very tragic time of our history. May The Almighty grant Hussein bin Ali and his comrades the best spot in Paradise for their unflinching courage to uphold the values of the Final Message, The Noble Quran.  Please read our post Ashura - who was Hussein? Fasting on the Day of Arafah is not obligatory, however it's a good day to observe a nafl fast for those healthy enough to do so.  Insh'Allah.

I know it refers to Paradise, but what is it's literal meaning or connotation ?   Also want to know if Jannah and Heaven is the same.

Wa'salam.  The literal standard definition of Jannah (or Jannat) in Arabic is Garden.   The English word heaven refers to the seven heavens and vast expanse of the sky above us.  Therefore Paradise and heaven are two very different things.

Paradise is the English translation of the word 'Firdaus' (فردوس), and the Persian word 'Pardis' (پردیس), its definition based on Firdaus of Arabic.  Thus, the English term Paradise is actually taken from Pardis of Persian .. and Pardis from Firdaus.

I see.   Some sources say the word Jannah also means 'hidden.'  Any comments on that?

From what I know, the term 'Jannah' is from the Arabic root  j-n-n which does mean 'covered' in the literal sense.  Therefore the hidden allusion of 'Jannah' .... that it's unseen by humans in this world, and will be visible only after the Day of Judgment to those who qualify for it.  For humans on earth, Jannah is in the category of Al-Ghaib (الغيب) which means it is yet unseen by humans and only Allah Almighty has complete knowledge of it.  The beauty of Jannah is very different from anything known to humans, something which no ears have heard and no eyes have seen and like nothing that might cross your mind or heart.  We must not think about it from the earthly perspective.   Thus Jannah is unseen for humans on earth or covered from their sight.  This is the way Allah has ordained it.  Subhan'Allah.

There are other words too from the Arabic root j-n-n  For example:  'Jinn' that are a species of living beings hidden from human sight.   Also other words like "janin" جنين which means the unborn child or fetus covered inside the mother, the word "al-janaan" الجنان the heart covered inside the chest etc. etc.

But the standard definition of 'Jannah' is Garden (of unprecedented beauty which is hidden from the eyes of humans on earth).
