Salam.   Is it necessary to perform tasleem (salam) at the end of our salah?  Can tasleem be done only towards one side?  Is tasleem to end salah mentioned in the Quran?

Walaykum Salam.

Tasleem or salam to the right is the one that ends our salah.  Salaam to the left is almost always done, but not viewed as necessary.

No, tasleem is not mentioned in the Noble Quran.   It comes from the following Hadith:

"The Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said: The key to prayer is purification, its start is the takbeer (saying Allahu akbar) and its exit is the tasleem (saying the salaam).  Source: Abu Dawood (61) and at-Tirmidhi (3).

Therefore our scholars accept tasleem as obligatory and essential to conclude our salah, without which prayer is not considered valid.

Regardless of whether this hadith is authentic or not (and most of them aren't authentic unfortunately), tasleem by itself is a polite and respectful gesture toward the recording angels that write our deeds (which is mentioned in the Quran), giving salam to each of these two angels who accompany every individual.  So, we take it as a good deed and therefore an essential final step before concluding every salah.   After all, Allah Almighty is pleased with all respectful deeds.   That's our take on the topic of tasleem.

May Allah accept this respectful deed from all of us.   Ameen.

Ok, yes it is respectful.  But will our heartfelt prayers to Allah be unvalid without tasleem?

I get your point.  Probably not.  If our prayers are sincere towards Allah, and we also don't mean any disrespect to the recording angels (who are the creation of Allah) by missing out on tasleem, then of course it's likely Allah Almighty may accept our prayers.  But only Allah knows best.

In my personal opinion it's certainly a good practice to observe tasleem.
