Assalam o alaikum brothers and sisters,

Thanks for your replies in my other threads. I have been slowly reading through the threads that Zainab linked. I tried talking to my sunni freind and the conversation always came back to 'obey Allah and the messenger'. I'm not yet knowledgeable enough of the quran to put up a strong argument. But even if I was I'm not sure if it would of made any difference.

I have another question.

I know the hadiths strongly say good things about those who pray the night prayer qiyam. But after quickly searching Google for information I wasn't able to find if the quran said anything about it. I have started to pray 2 raka at about 2am but don't want to continue doing this if the quran does not speak of it. I have kind of just been assuming that it is pleasing to Allah to do so but please correct me if I am wrong.

Thanks 🙂

Walaykom Salam brother Jeff.   Insh'Allah, I pray you are fine.

Right, as we already mentioned, there's no point discussing Quran alone with Hadithists.   We have tried that many times in the past and it has proven to be an exercise in futility on every single occasion .. and a colossal waste of time.  So, let Allah be the Judge;  we only need to guard our own souls from misguidance by following myths and tales from extra-Quranic sources which include the massive collection of hadith forgeries.

Night prayer or Qiyam-al-Leil is of two types.  I mean, it's only the timings that vary, not the method.

1)  Night prayer or Qiyam can be offering some optional nafl (extra) prayers (two, four or more rakats whatever you wish) soon after finishing your fard (obligatory) Isha prayer.

2)  Night prayer or Qiyam can also be Tahajjud prayers.  Tahajjud salat refers to going to sleep after Isha and then waking up couple of hours or few hours later to offer nafl prayer.

Alhumdulilah and Maash'Allah, it's very nice to know you are doing two rakats of Tahajjud prayer in the middle of the night.  The reward is immense in the Sight of The Almighty.   Definitely the Noble Quran does speak of it.  It's optional, as I understand it, but hugely rewarding.  We have quite bit of contents on this topic.

If you visit the following links and read gradually, you will know exactly what Night prayers (in Arabic Qiyam al Leil) is.   It mainly refers to Tahajjud, that is, waking up after sleeping for some hours to offer nafl prayer and remember The Almighty.  It's a wonderful way of getting close to Allah.

- Let us take some time out for Tahajjud (with some links to related posts)
-  Are we sure Tahajjud prayers is not fard?

May Allah Almighty shower HIS choicest blessings on you for all your efforts.  "And have patience, for indeed, Allah loses not the wages of the good."  11:115 Surah Hud.
