 BismEm

"The Night of Power is better than a thousand months."  97:3 Al-Qadr.

As-Salam Alaykum dear all.  Need a clarification on the interpretation of the above Verse.  Such a lovely one!  I wanna know that do the words "better than a thousand months" refer to thousand months of worship or the time span of a thousand months?

That ustada said thousand months of worship but I don't see the Verse indicating that.

Walaikum Salaam Sister Ruhi.

V.97:3 refers to the time span.  Also, it doesn't literally mean one thousand months or 83 years by the count. It metaphorically alludes to a very long period of time which would include many nights.  In written and spoken Arabic, the word "thousand" prefixed to terms like months, days, nights or years, symbolically denotes a very long time.

Traditionalists, according to a string of ahadith claim it means better than a thousand nights of worship.  Well, needless to say, Leilatul Qadr is a very great and tremendous Night.  And for this reason we try our best to keep up with extra worship throughout the month of Ramadan because The Almighty chose not to disclose to us precisely which night is Leilatul Qadr.  But to assert which night or day of worship is best is only up to Allah to decide.  It also depends how sincerely and attentively people perform their worship at all times on the basis of which Allah decides His acceptance of our worship.  If someone worships during Ramadan heedlessly with a wandering mind, that may not be too beneficial for them.

Furthermore, if you concentrate on this Verse, quite clearly it does not refer to the act of worship as better than other times of worship, rather it refers to the Night of Qadr itself as superior to all other nights because it is the Night of Decrees, when The Almighty sends down all His decrees for an entire year from one Night of Qadr to the next through His slaves, the angels, including angel Jibreel (Gabriel).  Quoting the Verses of the same Surah following Verse 3:

"The angels and the Spirit descend therein, by the permission of their Rabb, with all decrees."  97:4.

"(The night is) Peace until the rising of the dawn."   97:5.

It's very simple to discern and understand.  Surah Al-Qadr refers to the precise Night on which the Noble Quran began being revealed, and it is the Night when HE sends down HIS Decrees.  Allah Almighty refers to the greatness of this particular Night as better than "a thousand months" (indicating a very long time with many nights).

Thank you very much dear Sis.   I too read it similarly.   But the ustada kept saying it means better than other nights of worship and spreading confusion, and I somehow felt she was speaking inaccurately.

Has that muddle headed ustada ever got anything right in her entire life thus far?

Surah Al-Qadr is so easy to understand as we read it, yet those folks prefer to stick to incorrect interpretations coming from hadith gossips.

😃   ...... that is a typical hadithist misinterpretation sprouting from none else other than Bukhari and Abu Huraira - the master falsifiers.  Quoting Bukhari on the "authority" of Abu Hurairah, the Prophet said: "The one who remained standing in worship in the state of belief and for the sake of rewards from Allah during Lailat-ul-qadr, would have all his previous sins forgiven."   As if the Prophet (pbuh) would ever give such assurances to anyone.  No way!

Excellent question Sis 🙃 ......  😅   That idiot ustada has only studied the hadith and not a single line of the Quran.

And thanks Brother TS for quoting that typical Abu Huraira sort of forged narration trying to show that the Prophet (pbuh) already knew the decisions of Allah Almighty.
