August 01, 2022, 08:48:12 pm Ruhi_Rose: As-Salam Alaykum MV guests. Just a reminder how time flies. We're already in the Islamic new year of 1444 month of Muharram, a very tragic time of our history. May The Almighty grant Hussein bin Ali and his comrades the best spot in Paradise for their unflinching courage to uphold the values of the Final Message, The Noble Quran.  Please read our post Ashura - who was Hussein? Fasting on the Day of Arafah is not obligatory, however it's a good day to observe a nafl fast for those healthy enough to do so.  Insh'Allah.

"O Prophet, why do you prohibit [yourself from] what Allah has made lawful for you, seeking the approval of your wives? And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful."  66:1

"And [remember] when the Prophet confided to one of his wives a statement; and when she informed [another] of it and Allah showed it to him, he made known part of it and ignored a part. And when he informed her about it, she said, "Who told you this?" He said, "I was informed by the Knowing, the Acquainted." "  66:3

In Verses 66:1 and 66:3, there are two traditional stories for interpretation.  The first says one of the Prophet's wife received a gift of honey from a relative and she put it before him to taste it.  That made the Prophet (peace be on him) spend more time in her home than was customary which upset Ayesha and another wife of the Prophet and they made a false fuss that the honey left a bad odor in his breath, and then the Prophet (pbuh) vowed never to eat honey again.  Second traditional story says one of the Prophet's wives, Hafza, did not like another wife of his, Marya.  Hafza pretended to be upset and the Prophet moved by Hafza's distress (which she feigned) vowed not to have anything to do with Marya.  This was supposedly a plot between Hafza and Ayesha to push out Marya.

Do you think verses 1 and 3 of Surah 66 refer to any of these two traditional stories?

These traditional stories could be inaccurate or fabricated.  Only Allah knows the precise details.   All we know from reading Verses 66:1 and 66:3 is that in these Verses the Noble Quran rebukes the Prophet (pbuh) as well as two of his wives (their names not mentioned in the Quran).  The Prophet (pbuh) is admonished for yielding to the unreasonable demands of his wives to the extent of prohibiting something for himself which Allah Almighty has made lawful.  The wives are admonished for their gossipy intrigues and pretence.   Like I said, the real occurrence is known to Allah only.   Apparently it was something personal about the Prophet's (pbuh) life, the accurate details of which are known to Allah alone.

The moral lesson for us to derive from Verses 66:1 and 66:3 is that we must not prohibit anything which Allah Almighty has not forbidden for us.   This is the relevant point we need to know and remember.
