May The Almighty grant Hussein bin Ali and his comrades the best spot in Paradise for their unflinching courage to uphold the values of the Final Message, The Noble Quran.  Please read our post Ashura - who was Hussein? Salam to you all.

According to Imam Jafar al-Sadiq, “A believer who is physically strong is better than a weak believer.”

I was musing about this, could not decipher.

Strength is defined as physical.  What does the weakness touch on?  Physical weakness or spiritual n ethical weakness?  If it’s physical weakness, why is it necessary for a feeble or infirm person to be spiritually or morally weaker than someone in the prime of their health?   If it’s spiritual or moral weakness, it’s just as ambiguous because a person better than someone who is morally/spiritually weak will be one who is morally/spiritually strong, not physically strong.

Can you clarify ?

Walaykum As-Salam.   I think what they are trying to say is that good health is better than poor health.  Or, everyone should try to stay healthy instead of neglecting their health, alluding to physical health in both cases.  But the Hadith school has this old habit of using obscure and cryptic expressions, creating further misunderstandings.  Additionally, the English translations aren’t the best either which add to the existing mess.

You mean, a healthy person more dear to Allah than a unhealthy person?

No, I certainly don't mean that which would be gross misinterpretation.

Seems like this hadith is an advise to take care of one's health by adhering to good habits and thus staying healthy.   But as usual, there is little or no articulation and thus the confusion.

This narration often pops up in lectures and presentations about the concept of health in Islam.  The Noble Quran does not mention too much on physical health issues.  Thus our shaikhs and shaikhas turn to picking hadith narrations.

The Quran mainly speaks on spiritual health, that is, Truth, belief and guidance for spiritual and intellectual strength and wisdom. There are of course many Verses that provide solace and comfort for the distressed.

There are some Verses that maybe interpreted as underscoring the importance of good physical health. But only Allah knows their precise interpretation.  Those Verses are as follows:

“and eat and drink and be not extravagant; surely He does not love the extravagant.”  7:31  Al-Araf.   Some people have interpreted this as indulging in over-eating.  It may refer to it indirectly in extreme cases through extravagance or wastefulness.  This would be a moral issue, however, it can have an impact on one’s physical health as well.

“Eat of the good things wherewith We have provided you, and transgress not in respect thereof ..”   20:81 TaHa.  This certainly refers to Halal food, and may also refer to food which is additionally healthy for sustenance as well.

"O mankind: Eat of what is lawful and good on earth" (Quran 2: 168).  While "lawful" refers to what is Halal, “good on earth” may refer to healthy foods.

“Forbidden unto you (for food) are carrion and blood and swineflesh, and that which hath been dedicated unto any other than Allah, and the strangled, and the dead through beating, and the dead through falling from a height, and that which hath been killed by (the goring of) horns, and the devoured of wild beasts, saving that which ye make lawful (by the death-stroke), and that which hath been immolated unto idols. And (forbidden is it) that ye swear by the divining arrows.”  5:3  Al-Maidah.   In this Verse, Allah forbids us to consume certain things, which are Haram.  And also, adhering to these Divine Commandments can certainly be taken for the betterment of human health.   Of course, those animals slaughtered or sacrificed in the name of any other deity except Allah Almighty are forbidden to consume.  This is in regard to spiritual health.   To know the interpretation of divining arrows, please read.

“They question you about strong drink and games of chance. Say: In both is great sin, and (some) utility for men; but the sin of them is greater than their usefulness.”  2:219 Al-Baqrah.  Alongside gambling, this Verse also highlights the drawback of intoxicants.  While its utility would include only the ignorant pleasure of intoxication felt by many humans, it carries possibilities of great harm, that is, destruction of health and family relations that far exceed any usefulness.

“And of the fruits of the date-palm, and grapes, whence ye derive strong drink and (also) good nourishment.”  16:67  An-Nahl.  The Almighty states two different aspects – the positive and the negative – from the same sources.  Fruits are nourishing, nutritious and healthy if you eat them fresh or cook them rightly.  And certain fruits can be harmful if you misuse them to prepare intoxicants.  The aspect described here is similar to the one in V.2:219.

And only Allah Almighty knows the exact interpretations of all Verses quoted above.

Hope these examples directly from the Noble Quran help you to understand the topic, InshAllah.

Is this hadith true, what are the chances of that?

No idea, except that forgery is rampant in the hadith institution.  99% of hadith narrations are not the words of the persons the narrations claim.

In this regard, we should simply follow the Quranic Verses quoted and try our best to take care of our health.  That is always advisable for sure.
