May The Almighty grant Hussein bin Ali and his comrades the best spot in Paradise for their unflinching courage to uphold the values of the Final Message, The Noble Quran.  Please read our post Ashura - who was Hussein? And of the fruits of the date-palm, and grapes, whence you derive strong drink and (also) good nourishment. Lo! therein is indeed a portent for people who have sense.  16:67.

From what I was told, "strong drink" here means alcohol, intoxicant drinks.  Does this verse say that strong drinks contain nourishment as well?

No it doesn't mean that.  Strong drink refers to the alcoholic stuff that's made from dates and grapes by fermentation.  People have been practicing the fermentation process of fruits, honey, rice etc. for thousands of years for making alcoholic drinks and beverages.  Nourishment in this Verse alludes to fruits like dates and grapes consumed in its fresh form without fermentation.

Consumers of alcohol often claim wine made of grapes is "good for health" referring to the properties of grapes. But modern doctors disagree confirming only grapes contain nutrients, not the alcoholic drink.  Therefore if you want nutrition from grapes, just have fresh grapes (minus the alcoholic drink).  This aspect is exactly what V.16:67 alludes to.

In this Verse The Almighty also tests our discernment .. to what extent we perceive the matter correctly or err.  Allah mentions the fruits (dates and grapes) and then the aspects of strong drink and nourishment.  So, if you wish to derive the nourishment, will you buy and consume fresh dates and grapes from the market OR will you derive the nourishment of grapes and dates through consumption of alcohol (by fermenting the fruits)?   Obviously, any intelligent and rightly guided person will simply consume fresh dates and grapes to acquire the nutrition they are looking for.

Thankx good read.    Some people explain this verse saying it was revealed before the ban of alcohol so that's why it says of alcohol and nourishment.

Regardless of when the Verse was revealed, that explanation is wholly wrong.  Anything which Allah Himself perceives as harmful, inappropriate or bad does not become nutritious or good after a while.  Allah Almighty NEVER contradicts Himself.  As I already clarified, the characteristic of nourishment in Verse 16:67 does not apply to the alcoholic drink.  These are two separate features from the same source, that is, alcoholic drink and nourishment both coming from dates and grapes.  Yet while the source is the same (dates and grapes), the two features (strong drink and nourishment) ensuing from that source are very different.
