August 01, 2022, 08:48:12 pm Ruhi_Rose: As-Salam Alaykum MV guests. Just a reminder how time flies. We're already in the Islamic new year of 1444 month of Muharram, a very tragic time of our history. May The Almighty grant Hussein bin Ali and his comrades the best spot in Paradise for their unflinching courage to uphold the values of the Final Message, The Noble Quran.  Please read our post Ashura - who was Hussein? June 30, 2022, 05:37:22 pm Heba E. Husseyn: Salaam all.  Today is 1st Dhul Hijja 1443 (corresponding to June 30, 2022).  Day of Arafah will be on 9th Dhul Hijja (July 8th) and Eid-al-Adha on 10th Dhul Hijja (July 9th). Fasting on the Day of Arafah is not obligatory, however it's a good day to observe a nafl fast for those healthy enough to do so.  Insh'Allah.

Salam Aleykum.  I have heard there are specific duas to be said before we start reading the Quran and after reading it.  Do you know which duas and is it fard to read these duas?

Walaikum As-Salam.  Yes, traditionally via Hadith there are two specific supplications one can recite before starting to read the Noble Quran and after finishing it.  These two duas are available in the duas.org website with Arabic and English translations.  Click on the “Before/Start” button for the dua recited before reading the Noble Quran, and click on the “After/Completion”  button for the dua recited after finishing.

These supplications are not fard.  It’s up to you, whether or not you want to recite them.  Alternatively you can recite any dua of your choice;  only make sure that if it’s an exta-Quranic dua, it must be compatible with Quranic principles.  It’s best to recite something from the Quran.  I recite the Fatiha before starting and Ayat-al-Kursi after finishing .. and prior to reciting Fatiha I also recite "Auzu Billahi Minash Shaitan Rajeem" (“I seek refuge in Allah from Shaitan the outcast”).

Ok, right, and if I recite these 2 duas, do I have to memorize it or can I read from writing it on a piece of paper?

Not necessary to memorize either.  You can read the written supplications.

It is a following of the Divine Commandment in the Quran where Allah Almighty says “And when you recite the Qur'an, seek refuge in Allah from Satan the outcast.”  16:98 An-Nahl.   Therefore it’s an observance of a Quranic Commandment to seek refuge in The Almighty from Satan the outcast before starting to read the Noble Quran.  One can either recite "Auzu Billahi Minash Shaitan Rajeem" prior to Fatiha as Sister Heba stated, or one can also recite V.23:97 as given:

(المؤمنون‎  23:97) رَبِّ أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ هَمَزَاتِ الشَّيَاطِينِ
“My Rab, I seek refuge in You from suggestions of the evil ones,” 23:97  Al-Muminun.
