May The Almighty grant Hussein bin Ali and his comrades the best spot in Paradise for their unflinching courage to uphold the values of the Final Message, The Noble Quran.  Please read our post Ashura - who was Hussein? Not really, though some non-Muslims try to unleash confusion by claiming there is.

Whether you call it martyr or shaheed, both are similar and great concepts that beautify Islam.

Martyrs are generally references to those who have fallen in battle for the cause of Allah Almighty, defending the Faith or the Islamic homeland or both.  They can also be called Shaheed.  Shaheed basically alludes to “witness” for the purpose of testifying or giving evidence.   In Islam the reference here is to be a witness in the Hereafter.   The witnesses in the Hereafter are chosen by The Almighty.  Allah Almighty chooses witnesses from believers to give evidence or testify on the Day of Judgement, and this privilege is based on the depth and sincerity of their Faith in The Almighty in the life of the world.  It includes the righteous and the Prophets in the Sight of Allah.   This may include a martyr who achieved martyrdom in battle and also other righteous persons who may not have had the opportunity to participate in battles but stand out for their genuine piety.  Therefore, although these two terms are very similar and often used interchangeably (which wouldn’t be wrong), a very careful and closer analysis does bring out a slight difference.

Quran Verses in this context:

"And call not those who are slain in the way of Allah "dead." Nay, they are living, only you perceive not."  2:154 Al-Baqrah.

"If you have received a blow, the (disbelieving) people have received a blow the like thereof. These are (only) the vicissitudes which We cause to follow one another for mankind, to the end that Allah may know those who believe and may choose witnesses from among you; and Allah loves not wrong-doers." 3:140 Al-Imran.

"And whoever obeys Allah and the Messenger - those will be with the ones upon whom Allah has bestowed favor of the prophets, the steadfast affirmers of truth, the martyrs and the righteous.  And excellent are those as companions."  4:69  An-Nissa.
