What does “forces of the heavens and the earth” mean in this verse?

Refers to the sources through which Allah Almighty decides to punish the disobedient.  Some of these sources are in this world while some are in the heavens outside this world.  In this Verse the allusion is to the forces Allah has chosen in this world (that is, the believers) to confront and chastise the disbelievers.  The direct reference is apparently the advantages (victory) for the Muslims through the Treaty of Hudaybiah (Surah Fath).

The original Arabic word in V.48:4 is “junudu” translated as hosts or forces or sometimes also as soldiers.  The most accurate translation is ‘hosts.’
