Salam.  Of late I have been noticing online greeting cards for Islamic new  year circulating with the words “happy muharram”.    This is one such online so-called Islamic new year card I saw.



Never saw or heard of such things when we were kids.   Everyone has known Muharram to be a month of sadness and mourning, and it is identified with the martyrdom of Imam Hussain.  What is this greeting on “happy muharram” about?

Such stuff is absolutely vile.  Just ignore them.  It is yet another idea for sectarianism, this one from the hardline Sunni camp (in other words from the wahabis and salafists).   Needless to highlight, these wordings are despicable. Muharram is a tragic month because of its history which will not change.  New year in our Islamic concept is NOT synonymous with celebration. That's the tradition of the West. As Muslims we can simply start a new year with prayers for a successful future not to repeat the mistakes of the past.  That's all.  This practice of "happy Muharram" is a typical Wahabi - Salafist mischief to stir up sectarian antagonism and tease the Shiia-Muslim community. It is done with destructive intentions to deepen fitnah.

  Exactly, and even in the West they have picked the practice of celebrating new year from pagan Europe.  Prophet Essa, son of Virgin Maryam, (peace on them both) never taught such practices.
