Bring the dead to life

So, We said, "Strike the slain man with part of it." Thus does Allah bring the dead to life, and He shows you His signs that you might reason.  2:73 Al Baqrah.

Salam Mv.  What incident does this verse refer to, pls explain.

My other question is on verse 2:76.  I can't understand this verse, grateful if you pls explain.

Behold! when they meet the men of Faith, they say: "We believe": But when they meet each other in private, they say: "Shall you tell them what Allah hath revealed to you, that they may engage you in argument about it before your Lord?"- Do ye not understand (their aim)?  2:76 A Baqrah

It refers to the Jews for sure, and probably also to the Christians, who wanted to hide or had already changed many parts the original Divine contents of their Scriptures.  There were many such folks who pretended before the Muslims that they believed in the Message (the Quran) sent through the Final Messenger.  But when they went apart to their own people, they would discuss and decide not to mention the original contents of their Divine Scriptures because they were already violating it so much.  These people also thought that if the Muslims (followers of Islam) become aware of the Jews and Christians changing their original Divine Scriptures, they (Muslims) would have a valid argument against those Jews and Christians before Allah Almighty on the Day of Judgement.  They forgot that Allah Almighty already knows their intentions and practices as He is aware of every act and intention whether concealed or open.

A little more from Surah Al Baqrah

Following is Surah Al Baqrah verses 67 to 71

67. And [recall] when Moses said to his people, "Indeed, Allah commands you to slaughter a cow." They said, "Do you take us in ridicule?" He said, "I seek refuge in Allah from being among the ignorant."
 
68. They said, "Call upon your Lord to make clear to us what it is." [Moses] said, "[Allah] says, 'It is a cow which is neither old nor virgin, but median between that,' so do what you are commanded."

69. They said, "Call upon your Lord to show us what is her color." He said, "He says, 'It is a yellow cow, bright in color - pleasing to the observers.' "

70. They said, "Call upon your Lord to make clear to us what it is. Indeed, [all] cows look alike to us. And indeed we, if Allah wills, will be guided."

71. He said, "He says, 'It is a cow neither trained to plow the earth nor to irrigate the field, one free from fault with no spot upon her.' " They said, "Now you have come with the truth." So they slaughtered her, but they could hardly do it.


What was the purpose of this sacrifice, and does this mean Prophet Moses was in conversation with God Almighty to get the answers of the questions which these people asked?  Who were these people?

These people were the Israelites (the Jews) soon after the Exodus when they left Egypt and were close to the land of Palestine. 

Yes, apparently Prophet Moses (pbuh) was in communication with Allah Almighty to help him (Prophet Moses) answer the questions put by the people.  But we cannot confirm the precise method of this communication, whether it was direct or through angel Jibrael or through sequential dreams.  Only Allah Almighty knows that best.

The purpose was to test the Israelites who had temporarily gone back to their pagan practice of worshiping the golden calf when Prophet Moses (pbuh) had gone to get the Torah (10 Commandments) from The Almighty. 

The Israelites were commanded to sacrifice a cow to abandon the old practice of worship of the cow which they acquired from the pagan nations of old and their customs.  It was a test of their faith.  If they were true Monotheists and sincerely believed in Allah as their only Deity, then they would readily sacrifice the cow.  But obviously their Faith was not yet strong enough so they tried to evade the sacrifice asking unnecessary questions.  It is opined that the  specific cow they were commanded to sacrifice was the one they had chosen for worship.  That is the reason they tried to delay the sacrifice with needless questions.  But finally they agreed to sacrifice it.
