Speaking lie while fasting

Salam to u.   Does telling a lie break the fast?

Walaykum As Salam.    Well, I wouldn't say it breaks the fast.  While only Allah knows best, I don't think lying breaks the fast but it certainly could diminish the extent of reward or blessings from Allah Almighty. 

It depends largely what kind of lie.  If it's a benign lie spoken light heartedly as a joke which doesn't hurt or cause distress to anyone, then I am sure it doesn't matter at all.   But if it is the type of lie spoken with the intent of upsetting or seriously deceiving someone to their detriment, then that could nullify much of the reward you would otherwise receive from Allah for a fast observed with good conduct and good intent. 

Moreover, speaking lies seriously as a habit is definitely a very negative characteristic and must be avoided at all times.
