It's worse than a prison .. it's a concentration camp.  Children as young as 10 or 11 are having to care for their younger siblings ages 2, 3 and 4 becoz many have lost both parents.  It's a very, very, very tearful situation there.

What does ameen mean?  Doesn't it come to traditional Islam from the word "amen" in Christianity?    I don't know of any ameen in the Quran.

Yes correct.  It is not in the Quran.   It is definitely taken from "amen" as often expressed in Christianity and Judaism which can be translated into "let it be so."  When Muslims utter ameen after a du'a, it means "O Allah answer my call."  Whether "ameen" or "amen" it carries the same allusion and purpose, requesting rather imploring, Allah to accept your du'a.  But as stated, it's not in the Noble Quran and uttering 'ameen' is not a necessity at the end of a du'a.  Whether or not Allah accepts our du'a is the Decision of Allah only, and His Decision is based on various factors of our lives, namely our level of sincerity and intentions.
