Al-Bukhari (1985) and Muslim (1144) narrated that Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say: “No one of you should fast on Friday, unless he fasts (a day) before it or after it.”

What is the purpose of this pointless rule/  Why can't I observe a nafl fast on Friday if I wish?

It’s just another illogical talk of a forged hadith.  If you want to observe a nafl fast on a Friday, go ahead by all means.

The reason Hadithists give is picked from various other forged ahadith.  They say Friday is a day for Jumuah prayer at the masjid, a day for du’a, dhikr and ghusl, and listening to the khutbah.  So it is recommended not to fast on Friday so that one doesn’t get too tired and thus not be able to perform other Friday duties.  Of course it doesn’t make sense. Many people can easily observe a nafl fast and also go for Jumuah and do zikr on a Friday.   There;s nothing too difficult about that.  After all, we all do this in Ramadan, don’t we?  If someone finds it hard, then let them not do any nafl fast on Friday.  But it’s a personal decision.  The hadith rule is totally invalid.

Hadithists keep propagating nafl fasts for Rajab and Shaban with great emphasis.  Yet they don’t realize that this can make one exhausted to observe the fard (obligatory) fasts of Ramadan.   At the same time, they are overly concerned about one Jumuah fast making us too tired.  A very contradictory argument.

Thank you sister.

And why is it also disliked to fast nafl on Saturday as well?

According to hadithists it is makrooh to single out a Saturday for fasting. ‘Reason’ is supposed to be that Saturday is a special day for Jews (referring to Sabbath I guess) because it is the day when the Jews refrain from working and they rest. If a Muslim fasts on that day, the fast may keep them from working or being too active so they will resemble the Jews in not working on that day.  Complete nonsense.  No one is obligated to accept this.

I did as much research on this one as possible.  Didn't make any sense. Agree quite nonsense.
