Salams dear all.  My husband and I had a long discussion with an annoying guest last week – a hadithist saying things we have never read in the Noble Quran.  One of the absurdest things he claimed was forgiveness from Allah has two kinds – Mafgfirah and Afuw.

According to him, ‘Maghfirah’ (مغفرة )  is Allah’s forgiveness of your  sin but the sin will still be registered on your book of records on the Day of Judgement.  Allah will question you about it but won’t punish you for it and neither will He reward you.   ‘Afuw’ (عفو ) is for Allah to forgive your sin and delete it from your book of records as if it did not happen and Allah won’t ask you about it on Judgement day.

In other words, as a figment of their own imagination, they are trying to give a double meaning to Allah’s mercy for His righteous slaves.  Only a very careless hypocrite or disbeliever would promote such lies about Allah.  Needless to say, the Noble Quran mentions no such concepts on forgiveness.    Any opinion on how this came about in the minds of these folks?

Wa'salam sister Ruhi.   The simple answer to that question is NO.  No difference.

This falsehood by traditional circles is, for some reason. always synonymous with a Tirmidhi and Ibn Majah Hadith, quote “Allahumma innakaafuwwun tuhibbul ‘afwa fa’fu ‘annee.”   Translation:  “O Allah, You are The One Who pardons greatly, and You love to pardon, so pardon me.”   Though I don't at all see how this hadith differentiates 'afuw' from 'maghfirah' as both allude to the forgiveness of Allah, it's pointless reasoning with hadithists.

al-ʻAfuw is one of the names of Allah.  It means The Pardoner, The Most Forgiving, The Effacing.  The word "Al-'Afuw" appears in the Quran five times as a name or title of Allah. It is often linked with "Al-Ghafoor" and also with "Al-Qadeer."

“And if you are ill or on a journey or one of you comes from the place of relieving himself or you have contacted women and find no water, then seek clean earth and wipe over your faces and your hands [with it]. Indeed, Allah is ever Pardoning and Forgiving (ʿafuwwan ghafūran).”  4:43 An Nissa.

“As for such, it may be that Allah will pardon (yaʿfuwa) them. Allah is ever Clement, Forgiving (afuwwan ghafūran).”   4:99  An Nissa.

“That [is so]. And whoever responds [to injustice] with the equivalent of that with which he was harmed and then is tyrannized - Allah will surely aid him. Indeed, Allah is Pardoning and Forgiving (aʿafuwwun ghafūrun).”   22:60  Al Hajj.

“Such of you as put away your wives (by saying they are as their mothers) - They are not their mothers; none are their mothers except those who gave them birth - they indeed utter an ill word and a lie. And lo! Allah is Forgiving, Merciful (laʿafuwwun ghafūrun).”    58:2  Al Mujadilah.

“If [instead] you show [some] good or conceal it or pardon an offense - indeed, Allah is ever Pardoning and All-Powerful (afuwwan qadīran).”  4:149  An Nissa.

The word Maghfirah is mentioned in the Quran many more times, 28 times as I read.  Quoting a couple of Verses as example as follows:

“These invite unto the Fire, and Allah inviteth unto the Garden, and unto forgiveness (wal-maghfirati) by His grace, ..”  2:221  Al Baqrah.

“Satan threatens you with poverty and orders you to immorality, while Allah promises you forgiveness (maghfiratan) from Him and bounty.”   2:268  Al Baqrah.

Also, Al-Ghafoor — The Forgiving, The Exceedingly and Perfectly Forgiving — a title of Allah that occurs 91 times in the Quran. Al-Ghafoor is the One Who forgives, regardless of how large the sin is, and He may forgive more than once.

As anyone can discern by understanding the above Verses, “Afuw” refers to the same forgiveness as the concept of “Maghfirah.”   Absolutely NO difference.   And absolutely NO concept nor reference that sin will still be registered after 'Maghfirah' while "Afuw" will delete the sin like it never happened.  Forgiveness from Allah, whether it's referred to as "Maghfirah" or "Afuw" or any other term denoting Allah's forgiveness simply means, as per the rules of Allah, that the forgiven sin is no longer there as an obstacle for the person.

I don't know from where the hadithists get these ideas.  InshAllah, they are the ones who will be questioned by The Almighty and their guesswork won't be deleted from their record.

As per medieval traditionalists like Ibn Jazziy and few more ..

QUOTE:
Pardon goes further than forgiveness, because forgiveness (maghfirah) reflects the meaning of concealment, whereas pardon (‘afw) reflects the meaning of erasing, and erasing goes further than concealing.
Pardon (‘afw) means not bringing a person to account for sin.  Forgiveness (maghfirah) means, in addition to that, concealing.  Mercy (rahmah) includes all of that, in addition to bestowing blessings.
Pardon means waiving the punishment from a person, and forgiveness means concealing his misdemeanour, to protect him from the pain of embarrassment and scandal, such as when a person says: I ask You for pardon, and if You pardon me, then please conceal my misdemeanour.
UNQUOTE:

These crazy ‘scholar’s don’t even know that on the Day of Judgement there is no such thing as scandal or embarrassment.  Everyone will be shown their deeds. It will be between Allah and every individual, and needless to say, the verdict will come from Allah alone.  Allah is the All-Knower and He is the Forgiver.  He Knows everything about everyone.  No one will need to hide or conceal anything from Allah.  No one that Day will think of their embarrassment or their privacy from other persons.  Everyone will be too preoccupied and engrossed seeking Allah’s forgiveness (or pardon, whichever you want to call it) for themselves.  Allah has NEVER anywhere in the Quran expressed nor even hinted on His Mercy having a double meaning for his slaves.  AstaghfirAllah again.

JazekAllah Khairan .. big thanks for this load of logical info.   Just shows how little they know about the Quran because of their constant distraction by traditionalists.

That hadithist was all the time referring his absurdities to some so-called scholar by the name Al Kafawi.

Abu Al-Baqa Al-Kafawi of mid 1600s differentiates between’ forgiveness and pardon’ (maghfirah and afuw)  though everyone knows these two terms allude to the same.

He says “Forgiveness implies waiving of the punishment and attaining reward .. Pardon implies waiving of blame and condemnation, but it does not imply attaining reward.” -  From Kitab-al-Kulliyyaat 1864 (p. 666).

This is the most un-Quranic commentary a person as ever issued.  It means that  a person is granted clemency from Allah yet that person’s reward is hindered.  Show me one Verse from the Noble Quran that says or conveys such an idea.  Allah is a bit too Generous with His Forgiveness or Pardon.  First off, as already stated, the Quran NEVER makes any difference between forgiveness and pardon.  Mercy of Allah has only one interpretation in the Noble Quran, that is, His compassion, clemency, beneficence, grace or pity for us.

Surah Al-An'am - 160: "Whoever comes with a good deed will be rewarded tenfold. But whoever comes with a bad deed will be punished for only one. None will be wronged".

"And be patient, for indeed, Allah does not allow to be lost the reward of those who do good."  11:115  Hud.

If Al-Kafawi presumes pardon implies waiving the blame but not attaining any rewards.  In that case as explained by br.TS  the person has been forgiven and will or can still face retribution.  This implies pardon from Allah is irrelevant and has no significance.

AstaghfirAllah.  Only a dumb disbeliever would talk like this.   About people who talk as such, Allah has said  “See, how they invent lies about Allah!  That of itself is flagrant sin.”  4:50  An Nissa.

The lack logic and thoughtlessness with which these medieval “scholars” wrote their commentaries is head spinning.  Even their average common sense is missing.
