A person sent this question to a science talk show on TV.  I found it so interesting that I thought I must share it with you guys here.  The person wrote that he has a cabin somewhere close to the mountains of B.C., Canada.  The rail tracks are just a short distance away from his cabin.  The trains pass quite frequently and can be heard loud and clear each time they pass in winter.  But during summer months, even though the trains pass just as frequently, they're barely audible.  He wanted to know why.

A science correspondent responded with the following explanation which I've paraphrased.

He stated that sound travels much faster in winter than in summer.  This is because in winter the air is heavier than in summer, and when air is heavy, it helps sound to move better.  When astronauts  are in space or in the moon, they literally have to shout at one another while speaking in order to be heard clearly.  And this is because the atmosphere there is so light that it doesn't help the movement of sound.  Scientists presume that if man ever lands in Mars, they'll hardly be able to hear one another even from a distance of 3 or 4 feet.

The laws of nature can be so fascinating, Alhamdulilah!   Yet few of us ever think of thanking Allah for His infinite Bounty.

I think I saw this program.  It was 'Mansbridge One on One' with Bob MacDonald, CBC's science correspondent.  I clearly recall watching this discussion.  Very interesting one.  Another very intriguing answer Bob gave to a different question was about the dinosaurs.  Someone asked if dinosaurs had any colour.  He said that we don't know that because their DNA is now too old to provide such information.  However, Bob added that since some dinosaurs could fly, that could mean that they were of the bird family in which case they must have had a lot of colour.  Birds are the most colourful creatures in our planet today.  But uptil now it never struck me to associate any species of dinosaurs with birds.  I thought all dinosaurs were reptiles.  They certainly look very reptilian from the fossils and photo sketches we see of them.

Only God knows best ..

Yeah, that was the program.  That question about color of dinosaurs was also interesting.  I too never thought of associating dinosaurs with birds.  The skeletons and old fossils of some have shown that they had wings.  I don't know if that would necessarily mean they are of the birds family.  For example, roaches and various insects also fly, like mosquitoes, bees, flies etc.  but they certainly can't be classified as birds.

Awfully interesting thread.  I love reading such stuff.  However, I never consider myself entitled to confirming anything.  Only Allah will tell us the truth of whatever we kept thinking about, in the Hereafter, not before that.
